Normal development of multicellular organisms requires cells to respond properly according to their positions, yet the positional information given to cells provided by morphogens (diffusive chemicals) includes considerable noises from various origins. In this paper, the process of positional information coding is information-theoretically formulated and an optimal design of positional information encoding to maximize the precision of positional information under noisy environment is proposed.
