細胞、脳・神経、免疫・感染症、発生、行動、生態、進化などさまざまな生命現象に対して、基本概念を数理モデルとして定式化しその解析やコンピュータシミュレーションによって生命現象を把握するという数理的アプローチが展開されています。これらは数理生物学もしくは理論生物学と呼ばれます。
数理生物学は、ちょうど物理学における理論物理学の役割を、生命科学において果たすものです.生命現象を解明する目的で、数理的手法およびコンピュータシミュレーシ ョンによって行なう研究であれば、なんでも数理生物学の範囲に入るのです。
九州大学理学部の数理生物学研究室は、そのような公式の名前をもつ日本で唯一の研究室として、博士課程修了者は全国の大学の教員や国公立研究機関の研究員として活躍しています。とくに分子進化学、生態学、理論発生学、数理社会学などの分野では、九州大学の数理生物学研究室の出身者の多くが日本での中心的研究者となっています。また米国、ヨーロッパ、オーストラリアをはじめとして様々な国でも活躍しています。
